“The Big Rush” for Athens Int’l Airport
LGAV / ATH
30 August 2004
During the Athens’ Olympic Games a non-Olympic event took place with many records broken.
Recording all the Athens International Airport’s arrivals those days meant some special moments were in store for the members of the Hellenic Aviation Enthusiasts Society, with some airlines and aircraft types landing there for the first time.
With help from the various security forces (Airport security, Police and Army) permission was granted to stay there and observing and photographing all traffic. We thank them all!
Highlights of the day: Qantas’ 747-400 “Wunala Dreaming” but also out-of-the-ordinary aircraft from Asiana, Air China, Air France, KLM, Lauda, World Airways, Omni Air, LOT, Kras Air and many others.
Also, we won’t forget any “native” special coloured aircraft marking the occasion. For the Olympic Torch Relay the Athens 2004 organizing committee leased a 747-200 painted in a special livery for the occasion while Olympic Airways, a Grand Sponsor, added special decoration on two of their 737-400s (namely SX-BKC and –BKD) and on their DHC-8s.
