After
less than 4 years, the association “Air-Born” visited again the 2nd SYAS (2nd
Army Aviation Group) based in Megara. On Tuesday March 27th, the multi-member
delegation met at the gate of the camp. Our guides, after a brief welcome at the
military club, led us to the administration building of
4th TEAS (4th Army Aviation Battalion) where we obtained some information
regarding the structure and the function of Army Aviation along with the
available air assets, and their role in the manning of the units. Then we were
led to the helicopters parking area of the 4th TEAS where we had the opportunity
to visit a static display constituted by CH-47D, AH-64D, NH-90 and two UH-1’s,
the first from which was modified into an Air Ambulance and the second one
configured for flights above the sea. Afterwards, we attended a detailed
presentation of the unit's air assets, given by experienced executives of 4th
TEAS who willingly answered to our queries.
However, the most intriguing part of our visit was the 'first' official
acquaintance with the most resent acquisition of Army Aviation, the latest
technology transport helicopter,
NH 90. A pleasant interruption to the presentation was the appearance of an
Apache AH-64D helicopter, performing a test flight that attracted our attention
and set our cameras literally “on fire”!
The event concluded with a visit to the civilian
section of the airport, a department which runs under the responsibility of the
Civil Aviation Authority. There, our members toured the apron and the hangar
observing a great number of small passenger aircrafts and helicopters.

Moraitis and Master Sergeant Kokkalis Thomas for the detailed presentation of
air assets.
